“Time and Circumstances are the greatest teachers”
This couldn’t be truer than during these testing Covid times. These circumstances taught us to value human lives more than money, showed us that true love lies in family and not materialistic things, told us that branded bag and fancy restaurant was not a necessity and how living actually needs just few basic things – shelter, food and life.
Most of all, it drove in the point that cooking is a life skill. Most ladies who wouldn’t let their sons enter the kitchen are now stressing over the fact that how would he survive alone in the city without any basic cooking skill. Such a positive change this is in the Indian Mindset which has such divided gender roles!!
Without going farther away, I would like to talk about my home – a place where the men of the house knew only how to make tea and they were very proud about it!! How to fold laundry, how to make bed, wash their utensils, cook food are subjects alien to them. And then happened this lockdown and world came crashing down!!!!
Okay!! I wouldn’t dramatize as much. The thing is kitchen, kid and laptop are deadly combination. To my surprise, He understood that since Day 1 and showed his willingness to learn. And voila, it is almost 3 months down, and I can truly say that he is sharing the load, if not 50% but at least so much that I can continue with my office and home jugglery without breaking down. We have now divided tasks between ourselves – laundry and utensils are completely his job along with evening tea and filling of water. These may sound menial but for the Indian men who have done nothing except watching TV on the couch once he entered home, it’s a remarkable progress and I am so glad that all this happened at his own will.
In fact, it is so much fun to watch Him and my little one enjoy while hanging out the laundry, such a pleasure when she pulls up a chair to standing at the kitchen counter to see her dad chop vegetables and countless more chores. I always believe, for children to understand equality in its truest sense, they have to see it, not merely hear about it. And across many households, this is happening!!! Households are changing. Finally!!
I loved the following video and thought to share it with you all. #ShareChoresMultiplyLove #SharetheLaundry #ShareTheLoad
